Blue Manatee
Antillean manatee / Karibik-Manati / Trichechus manatus
Conservation status: EN - Endangered
This blue greyish manatee is a gentle agile giant of the waters. They can do spins, pirouettes, jumps and even swim with their backs down.
One of the most common threats to these large animals is the drying up of marshes for crop irrigation purposes, forcing them to be moved to other locations or, in the worst cases, slaughtered for consumption. In the Sinú, Magdalena and San Jorge rivers, manatees are susceptible to hunting by fishermen. In Orinoquia, the highest cases of mortality occur in nets, especially in hatchlings and calves.
