Spectacled Bear
Spectacled bear or Andean bear / Brillenbär / Tremarctos ornatus
Conservation status: VU - Vulnerable
The Spectacled bear is a shy but bold animal that lives in the isolated forests of the Andes. In order to feed, they leave the highlands to have access to fruit, berries, cacti and honey.
Because of their diet and mobility, they help to disseminate seeds, allowing the forests they inhabit to survive. They are considered keystone species, meaning their conservation benefits the protection of the páramo, the cloud forests and dozens of species that live there. A large part of the water consumed by Colombians comes from these areas.
In various indigenous cultures, the Spectacled bear is a sacred animal, a magical creature symbolising a link between heaven and earth, a mediator between good and evil. He is the guardian of the moorlands and of the water.
