Blue-billed curassow / Blaulappenhokko / Crax alberti
Conservation status: CR - Critically Endangered
Blue-Billed curassows are morning and evening singers and will even make their song resonate when the moonlight shines.
Living alone or in pairs, Blue-Billed curassows forage for insects, fruits and seeds directly on the forest floor. They are known for leaving seeds intact, making them excellent dispersers, and actively participate in forest planting.
The Blue Billed Curassow can only be found in Colombia, with small and fragmented populations between La Guajira, Magdalena, south Antioquia and Boyacá; inhabiting tropical forests between 150 and 1,200 metres altitude. According to BirdLife International, only 250-1,000 of them remain in the wild and are critically endangered due to severe habitat destruction and hunting.
